VOICES OF RESISTANCE
An evening of solidarity in the fight for people’s rights
Saturday, December 10, 2011
6:00-9:00pm
Music Notes, 3430 Bathurst St. (@ Ranee Ave.)
Since 2001, the Philippines has seen a dramatic increase in extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, illegal arrests and detentions and various other forms of human rights violations. Often, the victims of these were human rights advocates and organizers from different sectors, such as peasants, workers and youth and students. But many others are also innocent civilians caught in the government’s “anti-insurgency” campaign.
When the new administration assumed power in 2010, promises of “change” and taking “the righteous path” gave the Filipino people some hope. Today, however, government forces continue to inflict violence on the people with impunity.
Around the world, similar struggles are taking place. With the current crisis facing the world’s wealthiest nations, the peoples of the global south and working people the world over are feeling the ever-pressing need to come together and assert their rights. And even as this resistance is meet with repression, the people’s desire for justice and freedom cannot be quelled.
Join us for an evening of music, poetry and visual presentations, as we celebrate the struggle for people’s rights in the Philippines and around the world.
