In April-May 2009, 2 trade unionists from ACT (Antonio Tinio) and COURAGE (Ferdie Gaite) visited Canada inorder to share their experiences and the experiences of their union organizations with public sector workers in Canada. The goal was to expose public sector unionists in Canada to the human rights abuses that target trade unionists in the Philippines – problems that were occurring against the backdrop of the ongoing struggle against the privatization of public services in the Philippines – providing members in Canada with the opportunity to share their experiences and learn from successes and challenges encountered by the members of ACT and COURAGE.
As part of CUPE’s Global Justice Project, the Secretary-General of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) – Francisca Castro – is in Toronto to share her work against the privatization of public services like education in the Philippines as well as the overall labour and social situation in the Philippines.
